FIRE EXIT SUMMER: Phil Masters and Rob Carney, Fire Exit Summer have been up to quite a bit. Highlights include their first London gig, at the Brixton Telegraph, and further UK appearances at The Three Fat Fish in Exeter, The Archer in Newcastle Upon Tyne, and at The King of Hearts and Wensum Lodge in Norwich. But the most moving performance of 2003 took place in a cave in the south of Spain in early July. The duo stayed and worked as part of the Sunseed project near Almeria (www.sunseed.org.uk) for 5 magical days, refreshing spirits, clearing minds and having plenty fun exploring the river valley’s rock pools. At the end of their stay, Rob and Phil put on a little concert in a cave at the top of the river valley with the help of all the lovely lads and lasses who lived at Sunseed. They arrived after dark to find the cave beautifully decked out with candles, and everybody either sitting on little rock seats or swinging their legs off the naturally-carved balcony. What followed was an intense and uplifting experience that was shared by all cave dwellers. The acoustics were magic, and all the energy of Fire Exit Summer’s Sunseed experience poured out of their souls. Since returning to the UK, Rob and Phil have continued to write and record new music and songs, and have encountered some amazing musical souls around the fires and beaches of Norfolk. They have successfully got some of the music from Songs For A Restless Soul out onto a couple of TV shows (GenEx and Surf Mag on Extreme sports) and had a couple of songs included on the new Land of Saints movie (www.landofsaints.com) which is described by Surfers Path magazine as probably one of the best surf films ever to emerge from the Uk full of moody, lingering moments, stylish surfing and sweet, unexpected music. The overall feeling of this film is one of simplicity and beauty (www.surferspath.com). Fire Exit Summer continue to be inspired by the music of Dennis Wilson, The Beach Boys circa 1967-1973, Gene Clark, Silver Jews and others, as well as the energy that comes from the natural world. A tight budget means there is no choice like a lo-fi choice, and although Fire Exit Summer’s new album (provisionally entitled "Entwined") promises to be a very worthy, uplifting sequel to Songs For A Restless Soul, the band don’t plan on using more than 8 tracks, and will keep a pretty stripped-down sound.
