The Joint Chiefs of Cash began with our belief that music and musicians themselves should not be confined to the boundaries of mutual identity. (When you turn on your radio and you can’t tell the difference between John Meyer and Dave Mathews, there’s a problem). At the time of our incarnation I was personally growing tired of corporate-designed rip-off artists whose sole purpose is to look pretty, sound cute, and make enough money from an otherwise unaware public from a one hit wonder to retire. We were tired of buying CDs with one interesting song followed by 9 or so more that sounded similar but that were not quite good enough to enjoy. Speaking with family and friends in the music business, I would often discuss the problems record companies faced with reports of poor sales. From the record companies’ point of view, the internet was draining their cash cow through illegal downloads. From my perspective, and that of many friends and colleagues, the music itself has suffered somehow through the years due to social priority. It seems that, as a culture, we place more emphasis on an artist’s pin-up value than on their musical ability. For that reason, and the reason that many artists and producers take the safe road (“Hey, let’s do what that guy’s doing”) music has been increasingly losing its artistic intrigue. For example: I still listen to Classic Rock that is over 30 years old, but I don’t listen to music I purchased just 2 years ago, why not? It is our belief that music can, and for that reason should, grow and expand beyond our current standardized trends. As members of Generation X, we realized that our generation had no true musical style to call our own, at least nothing of mass appeal. We’re not calling ourselves the cure to this dilemma, but we can sure as hell try - and isn’t it about time? The Joint Chiefs of Cash are determined to forever push the limits of musical reality in order to ask that undying question with sound: “what if?” So in defining our particular style I will tell you that there isn’t one. We are poised and determined to explore every musical avenue possible as long as it’s interesting enough to be enjoyed by others. We blend Rock with Funk on Acid, Celtic guitars with Jazz beats, Reggae with God knows what else, plus etc. In doing so, however, we have come up with a personalized formula with which we compose and perform that we can definitely call our own. It is this formula we’ve adopted that has become the style we were after, Freestyle. I know the question you’re probably asking right now is why the name The Joint Chiefs of Cash? After cycling through about 30 different names, we finally got down to focusing on the common ground in our belief structures, our ideals, and our purpose. We did not set out to just play a different type of music; we set out to bring a different type of message to the mainstream as well. Our generation is the first in American history to do worse than that of our parents’ financially, our educational system is mistakenly sad, and we are required to pay taxes on social benefits that will no longer exist when we are at an age of necessity. These are just some of the minor reasons we’re fed up and in need of a radical rebirth of logic and love. More importantly right now is our concern over the current American policies abroad that are creating tension and hostility toward the US among many of the nations around the globe. The American “Corporatocracy” as we’ve come to know it has extended its reach to every corner of the planet crippling foreign economies and creating anti-American angst that has ultimately led to events such as 9/11. If our policies toward others don’t change, our future may be more desperate than it seems. The Joint Chiefs of Cash defines our attitude toward our governing body and its leaders as the major contributing factor to global unrest. We realize that our policy makers exist in order to provide those that already control the majority of wealth with more wealth. This same group of people utilizes the poorest among us as soldiers in an endless world conflict that serves the same purpose. A government that is of, for and by The People has no room for corporate interest here or abroad. Therefore it is our responsibility as overtaxed and underpaid citizens to expose the inequities cast upon us by the greediest among us ­ our leaders.
