Smokescreen
began in the winter of 2001 as a result of two bands, of brothers
Tom and Sam, combining and eliminating a few members leaving a
5 piece metal band containing drummer Kyle Tatam, singer Sam Loose,
guitarists Matt Kidd and Tom Loose and bassist George Whyles.
The band first had a few practices and it wasnt long before
they were ready to start gigging, at first only playing covers
in a local pub. As time passed on problems arose with drummer
Kyle Tatam, he wouldnt turn up to practice on time, if at
all and when he didnt turn up to a gig Smokescreen decided
it was time to get rid of him. He was replaced by, now current
drummer, Oli Walkers and so Smokescreen got back to practicing
and decided that it was time to write some original material.
The first Smokescreen songs written, were In the Black of
Night and Turning in the Grave which were both
Metallica/Iron Maiden sounding 80s metal songs. But as time
went on, the style has developed and changed dramatically, moving
towards a more modern style of metal. So with a new drummer and
a few originalsSmokescreen started gigging again and things were
looking up. They then decided it was time to put a demo to their
name, so they booked studio time for August 2003 and in the mean
time wrote some more original material. Leading up to the booked
studio time problems were this time arising with bassist George
Whyles. The summer crept up fast and the EP was recorded on the
30th and 31st of August 2003 at Meadowside Studios. Immediately
after the recording of the Welcome To Deaths Door
EP, the decision was made to replace bassist George Whyles,
with the bassist from another local band called Dave Cooper from
another metal band called Bonesaw. Once Dave was in the band,
things started to take shape, with Smokescreen winning the Spalding
Grammar School Battle of the Bands, and headlining Blackout
2003 also held at the Grammar School.
