Born in Holbrook, Derbyshire 9th July 1971 to a soundtrack of Sunshine on my shoulders little Lilley began studying the Piano. Later he progressed to having one hand on the Piano whilst his other hand holding a paint brush - watching his hero Tony Hart's 'Take Hart'. Then came the analogue synthesizers, Nik Rhodes, Martin L. Gore and dreams of Moogs, Roland Jupiter 8s then digital Fairlight C.M.I.s and make-up on Top Of The Pops. Mark soon began to write - perfecting playing and programming keyboards / sequencers through childhood before launching himself in the art world. Now a former Art and Design student of Barnsley College of Art and Design Mark left his second home to return to the Derbyshire Dales with John Denver and Stephen Duffy playing on his mind. Then after falling in love with The Lilac Time and meeting with John Tams at a recording studio, Mark was inspired to learn guitar and he is now rarely seen without one. He soon found himself writing for AND on stage fronting many endearing bands - Novel, The Cottage Industry, Zuckerman's Famous Pig, then later The Mark Lilley Band each one a stepping stone to finding his way home to now.....an accomplished singer-songwriter. Along the way receiving art accolades such as having paintings hung in The Derbyshire Museum and Art Gallery... At the age of 34 hes already had his songs commended by the award winning songwriter John Tams "Few can combine sight and sound as eloquently”. His recording of The King of Rome was spotted and played on BBC Radio's'Folkwaves by Mick Peat receiving rave reviews. Then Denby Parish Council crystallised Mark's writing expertise - commissioning him to write and record his tribute song John Flamsteed's kids did, (the official anthem written for the unveiling ceremony of the John Flamsteed revolving star map monument and planetarium heritage centre in 2002.) This song’s success led Mark to be booked and billed as ‘local hero’ at the ‘Belper Folk Festival’ and later headlined at ‘The Amber Valley Festival’ sharing a dressing room with Blue Peter’s Simon Groom! Due to the phenomenal response from his debut album, Mark was also asked to play a live acoustic session with interview on BBC Radio Derby’s prime time ‘Shane O’ Conner Show’ and has been featured numerous times in ‘The Derby Evening Telegraph’, ‘The Belper News’, 'The Derbyshire Times' and ‘The Ripley and Heanor News’. With self penned songs like the uplifting 'home from home', 'the man overboard you pulled ashore' (a stark song about divorce), the symphonic harmonies and key changes of 'philippa street' and the subtle brilliance of 'the opening titles', Lilley has proved his worth as an important asset to British songwriting. His solo debut album 'the opening titles' was released 16th August 2004, giving everyone access to those songs we have only been rationed with at concerts. On the strength of his work, SOLARISE RECORDS now stock the debut album making it available on the world wide web! Chromium Records also signed Mark to a non-exclusive record contract and released a compilation album featuring 'birthday suit' in May 2005. Mark has already written the second album 'Picture without a frame' and is midway through recording it, comprising of works such as the haunting 'Umbrella' (a big budget / production song featuring the legendary Stephan Hannigan - Depeche Mode 1993). The album also includes the epic psychedelic extravaganza 'far out man', the sexually loaded 'state of the art' (both featuring the beautiful Amy Metcalfe), the heartbreaking 'I reckon so' AND the accomplished orchestral film score-esque piece 'a Samantha paints a thousand words'. Believe me, this second album defines him, watch this space.
